fear of boredom
Why do we feel the need to rush to fill all the empty space in our days, & lives?
With information, data, infotainment, smartphones, tablets, tv, chatter? Fear of boredom?
No room or time to relax, ponder, think, or allow creativity to come to us.
Is it possible that creative outlets or aspects to life Are a necessary thing for some? Not a requirement like oxygen or food, but a nagging persistent itch to be scratched. If so, then is it possible that many of us have this missing. No room for it at All & it unknowingly creates unhappiness, longing, an unsettledness that we can't quite put our finger on, yet we know its there. Or not there. That common thread that Something is missing feeling, the what is my purpose here, or an emptiness, that has spawned what is surely a multi billion dollar, self help industry. How many are searching for that something, to fill a void or be complete? Books, tapes, gurus, philosophies, mantras & zealots. All of this have sprung up to meet our seemingly insatiable appetite for.... ?
Broadly labelled as faith. Faith in something. Anything. From Scientology to psychedelic experience & 6 ways in between. But, what if this void we attempt to fill is only soothed? An emotional salve, that is temporary at best. What if a creative outlet was the solution to his extra hierarchy of need?
Perhaps the act of creating something from nothing is spiritual in its nature. As in, good for ones spirit. From a blank slate... Paper, canvas, clay or otherwise our imagination conjures the beginning notions of any creation out of the ether. Invented or inspired. An original, or fairly original thought. Something that might stimulate another's senses. Or simply to warm ourselves with the satisfaction of making something. With our own hands, or ideas. A child showing you his crayon drawing, knows not of inspirAtion, or faith or or or. He only knows that it feels good to color, to draw, to create. Instinctual & primal, before the world jades that pure thought from him. Only to attempt to relocate it in mid-life :)
How many people fill that longing void with other things? Traditional & non traditional 'drugs' can dampen that emptiness, the dissatisfaction with ourselves or our lives. Don't tell me that television is not a drug, not an escape for the masses. The obese masses! Dont get me started on alcohol, the govt sanctioned downer. What if cigarettes gave us something to do with our hands, a substitute? Unconsciously stifling or acting out our stilfed instincts.
I think it makes me feel better when i express some creativity. A creative act.
I wonder if that is an instinctual primal urge of innate humanness, or just me??
