Dennis McKenna does a superb job of sharing 'his' story, & proves to be an excellent writer. He tells the linear tale of non-linear events. His descriptions of some of the effects & experiences of plants, medicines, & what we call drugs, is extremely well done. I related to these in a practical way, that I assume comes from his science background. The usual hippy trippy ways in which most of us try to relate these things to the uninitiated, is done in a logic based way that gave me new insights & appreciation. Exceptionally well done.
As a fan of Terrence's 'poetry rap', Dennis helped me understand how to appreciate Terrance. It's ok that some of it is not factual. Dennis, as did Terrance, says take it with a grain of salt. Without insulting his brother he framed what Terry did in real life, & helped reconcile some things I didn't agree with from Terrance's writings, but did not like to challenge, as it sounded sooo good. One realizes that it's ok, Terrance just wanted to make you think. & think for yourself. Which is what he was good at. In addition to a master of vocabulary!
For me, this book elevated Dennis, whom I knew little about, to Terrance's equal. I have a new found respect & reverence for him, his thoughts, words & work. I hope this pleases him, were he to read it. As an inquisitive, fact seeker, I really value Dennis McKenna's application of science to the mystical nature of his passions. Not always an easy thing to do. As he points out, traditional scientists do not like to talk about things they can't explain. Though it may be impossible, Dennis is trying.
An awesome read for fans of Terrance, plant medicine, Amazon adventures, or those seeking a better understanding of the roles of plants in our lives & world, be it a tree, cannabis, or ayahuasca. They are all here for us, to teach, to nourish, to breathe, to connect our world & so much more.
Thanks Dennis, that was awesome!
Much love,
JH
